The three years SEE HYDROPOWER project, financed by the South-East Transnational Cooperation Programme (EU), aims to a sustainable exploitation of water concerning hydropower production in SEE countries, looking up to renewable energy sources development, preserving environmental quality and preventing flood risk.
SEE HYDROPOWER defines specific needs and test methodologies & tools, in order to help public bodies to take decisions about planning and management of water and hydropower concessions, considering all multi-purposes uses, taking into account the environmental sustainability of natural resources and flooding risks.
Competition between water users (for drinking, irrigation, industrial processes, power generation, etc.) is becoming a serious problem, and there is a strong need of a more accurate planning and management optimization of the resources. SEE HYDROPOWER aims to be the solution!

The first plans to use hydropower in the Ourtal were made at the beginning of the 20th century. For economic and political reasons, however, they were not implemented.
It was only after the Second World War that the Luxembourg government took up the idea of building a pumped storage power plant again. The project had a European character from the start, with people from numerous countries involved in both planning and implementation.
On July 10, 1958, the legal basis for the Vianden pumped storage power plant was created with the conclusion of the State Treaty between the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Construction work on the power plant began in August 1959. In the winter of 1962/1963, the first 4 machine sets were put into operation. A year later, the second expansion stage, which includes 5 machines, was also completed. The official inauguration took place on April 17, 1964.
In the spring of 1970, the third expansion phase with a reversible pump turbine was tackled. The final commissioning finally took place in autumn 1976. The fourth expansion phase with machine 11 (reversible pump turbine) took place in December 2014.

It has a horizontal layout – at one axis it has in the middle a motor-generator and on the one side a Francis turbine and on the other a high-pressure pump. It is also interesting in that it moves water from the Hnilec catchment to the Slaná catchment area.

Kyiv HPP is the first (upper) step of the Dnieper cascade of hydroelectric power plants, located on the Dnieper River and located a few kilometers from Kiev. The station is part of the Cascade of Kyiv HPPs and PSPs branch. Kyiv HPP was built in record time: 1960-1968.
For the first time in the former USSR, low-pressure horizontal capsule hydraulic units were used at the Kyiv HPP.
The uniqueness of the Kyiv hydroelectric power station is that here, for the first time in the practice of domestic hydraulic engineering, the HPP building was combined with a concrete spillway dam with 20 spillways.
Today, the building of the HPP is 51 m wide and 285 m long of the connected type, structurally divided by temperature-sediment seams into five blocks of 4 horizontal-capsule units in each.
At the beginning of 2021, the installed capacity of Kyiv HPP is 440 MW.

The Lešće hydroelectric power plant is an accumulation dam plant with a capacity of 42.29 MW, it was built on the river Donja Dobra and its accumulation continues at HPP Gojak. It was built downstream from Ogulin, near the town of Lešće and Generalski Stol, in Karlovac County in the Kupa River basin. Donja Dobra originates from the rivers Ogulinska Dobra and Zagorska Mrežnica, which are directed by HPP Gojak. HPP Lešće represents the second energy step in exploiting the water potential of the river Dobra. By dividing the riverbed, an accumulation lake was created, which starts right behind HPP Gojak. HPP Lešće is designed as a single-purpose plant with the possibility of daily to weekly water leveling.
